Meet Aethel and her Family

Aethel

Aethelritha hates her full name. She is an orphan being raised by her grandmother. Her mother died when she was a toddler, and her father died a year before. He was a man-at-arms in the Earl’s service and was killed in a skirmish with the Welsh.

Aethel was born and raised at Bridgnorth. She has never been more than a mile from the castle.

Physically, she is overweight and medium height for a 10 year old. She has long brown hair and hazel eyes.

Her brother Bert

Osbert never goes by his full name. Not because he hates it, but because it does not suit him. He is the castle’s pig boy (swine herd). He also cares for the cow and chickens. He does not like working with sheep or horses, the former being too stupid and the latter too tall.

Physically, he is very athletic and muscular. He has blond hair and brown eyes.

Her grandmother Mildred

Mildred is the chief cook at Bridgnorth. Her mother was the chief cook before her and taught her everything there is to know about Saxon cuisine.

She was born at Bridgnorth in 1050. She has raised her 5 children (all girls) there. Her husband was the swine herd and died 17 years before.

Her great-uncle Wulfstan

Wulfstan is Mildred’s older brother. He was born there in 1049.

When he was young, in 1067, he had two options: join the Norman Earl’s service as a man-at-arms or go with his cousins to Denmark to join a mercenary force. In the Earl’s service he has traveled all over Shropshire and Normandy, where he learned many songs and stories.
